Forklift Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries used to power electric lift trucks must be charged regularly and properly maintained. Safety procedures should always be followed while somebody connects the battery to the charger. It is really important to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is vital for anyone working with a forklift battery. Full protection includes goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect skin and clothing from leaked acid or other residue is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station should be situated close to the charging place. The route to the station should not be obstructed and an injured employee must be able to go to the eyewash station from the charging area within 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It must be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are not allowed in the vicinity of a battery and charging area. Do not allow objects like lighters or matches to be used when someone is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
It is important to keep the battery charging area properly ventilated. The recharging process could cause fumes to be released. These fumes are both explosive and toxic.
